I don't like twins as DD simply because they are built wrong
physically for it. Ron has the tall, thin DD build, the twins are
short.
I do love the twin as Aberforth idea, though.
So....What about combining theories? Say, for instance, Ron=DD with
A Twin=Aberforth with a Dead!Twin scenario.
Say for instance Fred is killed in the struggle with Voldemort,
shortly afterwards Ron discovers he has to go back in time and be DD
(sometime before NEWTS, at any rate) and George volunteers to go with
him because, with Fred gone, there's nothing for George in the
present anymore. Could be either twin who bites it, I just used Fred
in this example.
Definitely explains the goat, and in a non-sexual way, too. Yay! Also
the remark about not reading, as the twins never finished Hogwarts.
And with one twin dead, the other might well give up heart on the
joke shop and take up bartending instead.
Perhaps the long white beards they sprouted when trying to cross the
age line in GoF were a clue?
