I don't like twins as DD simply because they are built wrong 
physically for it.  Ron has the tall, thin DD build, the twins are 
short.

I do love the twin as Aberforth idea, though.

So....What about combining theories?  Say, for instance, Ron=DD with 
A Twin=Aberforth with a Dead!Twin scenario.

Say for instance Fred is killed in the struggle with Voldemort, 
shortly afterwards Ron discovers he has to go back in time and be DD 
(sometime before NEWTS, at any rate) and George volunteers to go with 
him because, with Fred gone, there's nothing for George in the 
present anymore.  Could be either twin who bites it, I just used Fred 
in this example.

Definitely explains the goat, and in a non-sexual way, too. Yay! Also 
the remark about not reading, as the twins never finished Hogwarts.  
And with one twin dead, the other might well give up heart on the 
joke shop and take up bartending instead.

Perhaps the long white beards they sprouted when trying to cross the 
age line in GoF were a clue?
