Meri here:
I always thought Snape just suspected of Quirrel wanting to steal
the stone, and didn't even know about LV's residence in the back of
Quirrel's skull. However, a thought just occured to me. In GoF
Snape's Dark Mark starts showing up again, even before LV's
ressurection, because LV is getting stronger. Maybe the Dark Mark
started burning stronger during SS (though, of course, we and Harry
wouldn't even know what that is so we wouldn't have noticed any
references thrown in by JKR even if she had put them in there). And
then the prescence of said Dark Mark led Snape to suspect LV. So
maybe it was a little of both.
Meri - who is v. surprised that her brain can work like this so
early in the a.m.
