I think and hope that Lupin came to this realization on his own and
that he was already prepared to resign even if Snape hadn't let his
students know what he thought they had a right to know. (Note that he
maintained his silence until Lupin failed to take the Potion and
actually turned into a werewolf.)

Carol

Lupin had already turned into a werewolf at least 8 times during the school
year, he was careful to take the potion in the week preceeding his
transformation and including the day of him transforming. The thing was is that Snape was
revealing the information out of spite. He didn't get the Order of Merlin
first class. Look, Lupin was distracted that night by what he saw on the map, his
old friend Sirius and Pettigrew, seeing them go down into the Whomping Willow.
Think about it, the fact that Lupin and his friends had gone into the
Shrieking Shack during their school days, and seeing this after 12 years of believing
that one was dead by the hand of the other, drove taking the potion out of
his head.
