I'm not sure since I don't have my books with me, but didn't 
Dumbledore cover up that it was Ginny who had opened the Chamber of 
secrets, in order to protect her and her family? I don't think 
Ginny's participation ever was made public? 
I think Dumbledore says something to the effect that he thinks that 
could have been (one of) Lucius Malfoy's intent(s) (when he slipped 
Ginny the diary); to put Arthur Weasley in a bad light as a revenge 
for raiding his house for illegal artefacts. Just imagine the 
disgrace Arthur Weasley would have been put in (he is known to be 
a "muggle-lover", always campaigning for muggle rights) had it been 
revealed his own daughter went about harming and killing muggle-
borns...
