akh: I've enjoyed reading all the permutations of Snuffles, and, as a many-generation American, I've heard it used both ways, as a cuddly name and as another way to describe sniffing.  But now, to my point...

When I read the passage, I presumed Sirius was coming up with a deliberatly unlikely name.  Who would think, "Gee, I wonder if Harry is referring to his serial-killer Godfather when he mentions Snuffles?"  I saw it as a very effective cover for the real person.
