Well, I always believed that the protection Lily gave Harry when dying for him protected 
him against the one person who threatened him at this moment: Voldemort. It will not 
ward off *everyone* who touches Harry with bad intentions.
Quirrel was affected because, as you pointed out yourself, he shared a body with 
Voldemort, so the ancient magic was triggered by Voldemort's presence and destroyed the 
body he used at the moment (Quirrel's).
Wormtail, however, was simply his own malvolent self. He was (most likely) not even 
present when Lily made her sacrifice and the magic does not extend to him. The fact that 
he owes a life debt to Harry has nothing do with this - I never read that a life debt has any 
burning side effects ;-)
