You know, there's an interesting point.  You could say that Snape was being 
gullible here, or you could say that he put enough faith in the doctrine of 
Gryffindor chivalry at the time to trust that Sirius would not intentionally put 
him in danger.  He might have sneered at the do-gooder reputation, but he 
believed in it to some extent, in spite of all the nasty things the Marauders had 
done to him.  Otherwise he would have just said "Oh, a secret tunnel under the 
Whomping Willow that leads to all the answers?  Yeah, right, Black, pull the 
other one.  You go first."

Once again, I have to say, I don't blame him for not buying into Sirius' 
innocence later on.
