I meant that he might have been considering suicide as a possibility 
already...and then Sirius comes along with his tale about the Willow, and he sees a 
prime way to get his revenge as well.  Remember that in POA, both in his speech 
to Harry after he is caught in Hogsmeade, and what he says in the Shrieking 
Shack, Snape believed that all three of them were in on the prank.  I'm not 
saying it's likely, just possible.

But I like your theory as well.
