We don't need to go very far to find "something else"; DD told the 
Potters that someone close to them was a spy. So Sirius knew that 
one of his best friends is on LV's side. He basically had to choose 
between Pettigrew and Lupin. In the shack, he tells us why he didn't 
suspect Peter. That leaves Lupin as the spy by default. It's 
completely different from Sirius spontaneously suspecting Lupin.
