And she only managed with it was to make Harry baffled and lose some
of his trust for her.

Also, if Harry had not defied Umbridge openly, his magic would have
exploded before the class was over. I wonder what would have happened
after THAT. (Did MM ever hear about the Aunt Marge-incident?) Which
effect MM would prefer? Uncontrolled MAGIC against Umbridge or Verbal,
open Defiance for the truth? Harry had no other options.
