While I find the idea of Sirius as the one who *really* betrayed
James and Lilly interesting as a complex plot turn I do not think
canon, in the form of JKR's website, holds it up. From the FAQ:
Q: Do you like Sirius Black
A: (sniped much) "Sirius is brave, loyal, reckless, embittered and
slightly unbalanced by his long stay in Azkaban." (snip) "Sirius's
great redeeming quality is how much affection he is capable of
feeling. He loved James like a brother and he went on to transfer
that attachment to Harry."
Seems like some good fanfic fodder in the idea though!
