I just found this reference this past week:
Galadriel Waters' Book 1~Chapter 1 Analysis-Rowlinguistics:
"For Minerva McGonagall's name, J.K.R. uses alliteration, a technique 
she obviously liks a lot.  Minerva is the Roman name for Athena, the 
Greek goddess of learing, wisdom, war, and crafts.  Athena also just 
happens to have a famed reputation for morphing herself and others 
into clever disguises.  Her symbols are the owl and the olive tree.  
We can assume that Minerva McGonagall is intelligent and a formidable 
opponent, and she is likely to be proud of her clan. (p.11)"
