I just found this reference this past week:
Galadriel Waters' Book 1~Chapter 1 Analysis-Rowlinguistics:
"For Minerva McGonagall's name, J.K.R. uses alliteration, a technique
she obviously liks a lot. Minerva is the Roman name for Athena, the
Greek goddess of learing, wisdom, war, and crafts. Athena also just
happens to have a famed reputation for morphing herself and others
into clever disguises. Her symbols are the owl and the olive tree.
We can assume that Minerva McGonagall is intelligent and a formidable
opponent, and she is likely to be proud of her clan. (p.11)"
