I have a hunch that Dumbledore had a different view on that matter.

If we are to trust Dumbledore's judgment THAT much, wouldn't you 
think that James indeed deserved the position in his seventh year 
more than Snape did.

The problem is (as always with Snape to me) that we don't know what 
he is thinking only how is acting and based on his actions him being 
jealous of James' quidditch talent also seems very IC.

He always wants recognition. Seems reasonable that he wanted 
recognition on the Quidditch field too.
