No, Geoff, I did not forget "Return of the King" :) I don't know, 
even though Frodo wanted to use the Ring and yes, as you pointed out 
he would have failed, had not Gollum interfered, I was not impressed 
much in a sense.

I cannot even pinpoint my reaction and explain exactly why. Maybe 
since it happened at the end, it was not really a temptation to me. 
Like I knew that something will happen that will save Frodo's Quest. 
I guess, I did not believe it as  real temptation. I don't know.

Since I read LOTR three times(once in russian and then twice in 
English few years after my first reading), I don't even remember my 
initial reaction.

When Harry , on the other hand, tried to use Crucio! I remember 
being so surprised, and so hurting with Harry and knowing that 
miracle is not going to happen. It was perfect, IMO.
