Is that what JKR is trying to show us regarding Snape? His personal 
hygiene habits? A 30-something year old Professor not taking care of 
himself? It doesn't take that long to wash one's hair.

Maybe all JKR ever intended was to give us a description that would 
make Snape seem sinister and I can go along with that. Or she could  
*constantly* refer to his greasy hair and other features to give us 
a clue.

Smelly, greasy, dirty teacher? Surely not.  ;-)
