"Goyle reached out towards the Chocolate Frogs next to Ron - Ron
leapt forward, but before he'd so much as touched Goyle, Goyle let
out a terrible yell.

Scabbers the rat was hanging off his finger, sharp little teeth sunk
deep into Goyle's knuckle - Crabbe and Malfoy backed away..." PS pg
82, Canadian paperback

I assumed that meant "Scabbers", showing more intelligence than a rat
should have ;), protecting his master. It did make them leave, and it
did look like this were going to get quite messy had that not
happened.

You're right in the fact that he may have bit Goyle to show that he
had some worth, but mostly I thought he just wanted Malfoy, Crabbe
and Goyle gone as much as Harry and Ron did.
