I don't have a book with me, but weren't they all caught at the scene of the
crime? Malfoy or one of the others dropping the dime on them does make
sense to me. Another reason that occurs to me: There was a vacuum for the
social and political leadership of pureblood elitists. By getting rid of
the others Malfoy may have gotten rid of competitors for that leadership.
