I guess I was looking at it more from an outsider's point of view and not 
the character's.  It's just that when Snape is telling Harry about it he 
specifically states that James was saving his own skin, not that he was 
trying to save Sirius or Lupin's.  Perhaps at that moment, because he is talking to Harry, is why he focuses on James.  I have to confess that I 
am one of those that think there's a Snape/Lily connection that adds to 
Snape's hatred of James over the other Maruaders and resentment of Harry.
