I think that if the first book and the tasks were sort of a 
foreshadowing of things to come, then it is a great possibility that 
Ron will die.  As he sacrificed himself in the chess match for Harry 
to go on, so he may sacrifice himself in the end as well.  Another 
illusion to it is in Goblet of Fire when the Mermen take Ron as 
the "thing that Harry would miss most."  Maybe, we are seeing that 
Ron will be taken in the end???  Just a couple of thoughts on the 
matter...
