I think the only way it could have ended with a moral victory is if
Snape had found a way to stop it by himself. If he ended up rescued by
anyone, teacher or otherwise (which is the more likely ending if he
wasn't pantsed), it would serve as further humiliation in his mind. It
would have meant that he couldn't handle things himself. He seems to
be the kind of guy who prizes self-sufficiency.
