I always assume when matters like this come up that
JKR makes some assumptions that we can just guess,
(educatedly) that magic is involved. We are speaking
about the magic world after all. If the entire Witch
and Wizarding world and keep themselves secret they
must be able to do certian things to "cover their
tracks" so to speak. The modify memories all the time.
I don't expect JKR to explain all of these tiny
details, I expect that she assumes we don't need
everything handed to us and that we are intelligent
enough to figure out some things for ourselves. Just
my humble opinion. :)
