I do not have an answer to your question about how dementors came into 
being, but I want to add a thought about dementors to your thread if 
you don't mind.

I remember reading in an interview that the dementors were JKR's 
representation of depression.  That is quite an accurate view, IMO.

I find this ironic:
Followers of LV = Death Eaters
Nature/Funtion of Dementors = Life Eaters

Wonder if that is significan or simply ironic?
