I think it's the way you pronounce it!!

Thinking about it, I've always pronounced it to rhyme with "abhor" - 
which could be a possible etymology of the prefix....

"Crux", in Latin, has the meaning of a common or garden cross. My 
Latin dictionary also gives translations as "torture, trouble, 
misery, destruction" which could all play a part in Voldemort's 
activities creating horcruces [to use the proper Latin plural :-)].
