Ohhhhhhhh, I never thought of it that way, but I did have a similar
occurrence in my past, perhaps that is why I related to it so well! 
My "Lupin" held fast to his resolve, however -- and in retrospect, it
was a very good thing.  But yes, as soon as I read the "I don't care!"
exchange, I immediately understood and sympathized with Tonks, and I
was shocked that so many didn't see it coming.  But perhaps, unless
you have that specific perspective, you're not "looking for it," so to
speak.
