I have to agree with you. I think Lupin is lovely and I do believe 
that he would feel he should keep himself as isolated as possible to 
keep those he cares about away from danger. I imagine that it would 
worry him constantly that he might transform and hurt the people he 
loves. The thought of killing Tonks or their children would be 
dreadful. (but I also agree that it does sound a bit whiney)

I hope that you are right. I have a nasty feeling about the 
significance of Peter Pettigrew's silver hand (silver being lethal to 
werewolves). If it's not in the story to kill Lupin then maybe it is 
there to be used against Voldemort in the repayment of his life debt 
to Harry. Let's hope eh?
