I think, even as early as PS, Dumbledore had some ideas of why Voldemort didn't die at Goderic's Hollow.  Voldemort said, "Nevertheless, I was as powerless as the weakest creature alive, and without the means to help myself ... for I had no body, and *every spell* which might have helped me require the use of a wand...."  Dumbledore said, at the end of GOF that "No *spell* can reawaken the dead."  

As far as Dumbledore is concerned, he is dead, IMO.
