I think that Alice was summarising opinions of
"men-on-the-street", when she said (in the first
chapter of Wonderland) :
"... if you drink much from a bottle marked "poison,"
it is almost certain to disagree with you, sooner or
later."

How gullible one needs to be to believe that the most
evil wizard wanting to protect his most valuable
posession would put anything less than a deadly poison
in that basin?
Oh well, Harry will believe anything if it allows him
to stay in denial.
