If so, Lupin missed a teaching moment (or was uncharacteristically bad
at communicating) in HBP.
Do you not think that a profound and protracted sense of guilt could
eventually inspire resentment, and even hatred? Particularly with all
the other emotional baggage (including hatred for Harry's father
James, and for Harry's champion, Sirius) that Snape carries around?
