I think that since Dumbledore and the Potters were then in the Order 
they were in some way connected. So that when some of them die or is 
in a great danger the other know about it - or maybe just Dumbledore 
knows.


I would have agreed with you, that is until I remembered how it was Harry 
that had to notify Dumbledore in OOTP that Mr. Weasley had be injured in the the 
MOM, and Mr. Weasley was an active member of the order at that time.
