We've discussed this topic a little bit before, but it popped into my
mind that we know that muggleborns get visited by someone to explain
things to them when they get their Hogwarts letter.  Since Tom was
living in a muggle orphanage and presumably knew nothing about his
mother's magical abilities, I would think that he would also be
visited by someone with his letter, someone who could explain things
to him.  Could this person be the one who told him of his heritage? 
Who would that person have to be, in order to know that information?
