I think you're correct that DD was using Legilimency. The ironic 
thing is that this section always reminds me of Snape and Harry. 
Snape is always giving him penetrating stares, he doesn't like Harry 
as much as the other teachers and he keeps an annoying close watch on 
Harry.

I wonder what DD saw in Tom and I wonder what Snape sees in Harry? 
And for that matter, what does he see in Neville?
