The person that convinces me that it's not the students' wishes that 
are paramount to the sorting hat when making its decisions is 
Hermione.  She has said that the sorting hat considered putting her in 
Ravenclaw.  I am pretty sure that the Hermione who turned up at 
Hogwarts on day 1, given a choice between the house where the 
cleverest students go and any other, would have taken Ravenclaw every 
time.
