I am pretty new to this, so someone yell at me if it has already been 
stated...  but couldn't the HBP be Gryffindor?  JKR has stated that 
the first chapter was going to be the first in CoS, so a back story 
on the 4 founders of the school seems reasonable.  There was a lot of 
talk in that book about the founders, more about Slytherin and his 
cool monster than Godric, but still.  Just a thought...
