Nope, you didn't dream it. In GoF, Chapter 1, LV tells Peter, ". . .
But Memory Charms can be broken by a powerful wizard, as I proved when
I questioned her." (p. 12, U.S. hardback ed.). Before that (p. 11) LV
also stated, "I killed Bertha because I had to. She was fit for
nothing after my questioning, quite useless."
Also, when the Priori Incantatem effect takes place in the graveyard,
LV's wand emits screams after Bertha's shade (or whatever) appeared.
Although it's never stated outright that he used the Cruciatus Curse,
it seems extremely likely that he did.
