Of course they did set up to endanger villagers. It was an adventure
and danger was its necessary element. They thought it was a splendid
lark. I'd say though that it's not so much "the childhood values",
but rather "the Gryffindor values". They were brave weren't they?
They were chivalrous too (where Lupin was concerned). Unfortunately,
in this instance their bravery bordered on foolhardiness, and as for
their chivalry, well, they did not seem to think that villagers are
entitled to it.
