Dumbledore is not the kind of man who would deny a magical child his 
birthright (his magical learning) simply on the basis of what he might 
do. This is why Lupin was allowed into Hogwarts as well. 

Dumbledore probably suspected Tom Riddle in the basilisk caper, but he 
had no proof - and again, it is his nature (and his weakness) to 
believe the best in everyone.
