It matters to Lupin and Sirius, because they didn't want Harry to 
think bad about James. But what does it matter to us, readers, when 
we know – and you seem to agree – that whatever James thought it 
didn't make his behaviour any better? Honestly all that "he hated 
the Dark Arts" excuse sounded lame even for Harry's ears – and he 
wanted desperately to be reassured.
