Snape is a nasty man, not nice and not compassionate. We see very 
little evidence of any empathetic tendencies. But there is a big 
difference between that and evil.

It is quite possible for someone to be unpalatable and still 
basically, and I stress basically moral, when it comes to the 
bigger picture.
