Well, we don't know if James had it since his first day...

Don't forget that somehow the three animaguses were not discovered by 
Dumbledore. I think it was for the purpose of helping poor Moony that 
James got the Cloak for.

As for getting food out of the kitchen - guess they took it to the 
Shack after the Moon had set - poor Moony must have been hungry out 
there. Dumbledore would know James used the cloak to get food out of 
the kitchen. I doubt he was all THAT hungry. But I think his wolf of a 
friend WAS hungry.

I also think that James&Sirius might have read trough the library to 
find out what books dealt with animagi, (meaning they got great grades, 
too) *bought* them and then disguised the book to look like something 
else. (rather than borrowing a library book...)
