As Geoff so dramatically pointed out :), this has been discussed 
before.  I personally think RAB is alive, though -- they never found 
his body as I recall.

Here's a wild RAB theory for you, partially intended to be tongue-in-
cheek.  One of the Horcruxes is locked up at Gringotts, where else?  
RAB discovered the location, attempted to break in and got sucked in 
the vault fewer than ten years ago, b/c they check the vaults every ten 
years.  He's survived all this time b/c he had his wand and he managed 
to destroy the Horcrux.  Wonder when the next vault check is due?  :)
