Maria now:
I don't think they two statements are contradictory. The mists is the
consequence of the breeding, from that statement, the other one is the
way the reproduce, like a fungus. Maybe the mist is something she
thought of later, but it seems to me that she had already given some
thought to it when the first question was asked.
Anyway, just my opinion.
