Geoff:
I've always taken it to be another of JKR's wordplays such as her 
spoonerising of "Sturm und Drang" for example or Diagon Alley and 
Knockturn Alley.

In old English, a wild boar would sometimes be called a "warthog" so 
making such as shift would not be out of character.
