I am wondering if this has something to do with Harry having Lily's 
eyes?  Perhaps the book was enchanted so Lily could look at the 
notes, as well as Snape.  Lily, if I remember correctly (always 
problematic), had the power of seeing the good in people.  Maybe this 
was part of the reason Harry defended the Prince so vehemently; he 
could see the good in the Prince where others could not.
