We don't know a thing about Mr. Black, except that we can infer that
he's dead, as Sirius inherited 12 GP. And that he had the same
pureblood mentality that we've heard spewed forth by Mrs. Black/s
portrait.
Maybe JKR hasn't told us a thing because he isn't important to the
story line. Or maybe who he is/was will be a key bit of
information, but JKR has managed to deflect any interest in him
because her portrayal of the truly awful Mrs. Black has taken
precedence. I've seen some speculation in the past that perhaps
Snape was Mr. Black's bastard son, which could have added to the
enmity between Sev and Sirius, if somehow both boys found out about
it during their Hogwarts days.
Even if he has no part to play, I'd still like to know what his name
was, if only to see if there is any celestial significance to it.
