IMO of course. <snip>
Carol responds:
Lupin sees Sirius pulling Ron and Pettigrew (in rat form) into the
tunnel under the Whomping Willow (PoA Am. ed. 348) and enters it "a
few minutes" after Harry and Hermione (404). By that time, Padfoot,
moving quickly, has dragged Ron into the Shrieking Shack. (Sirius and
the Trio have six pages of dialogue before he arrives at a run.)
Snape sees Lupin, and only Lupin, when he's already inside the tunnel:
"Lying on your desk was a certain map. One glance at it told me all I
needed to know. I saw you running along this passageway *and out of
sight*." (PoA Am. ed. 358). So the Shrieking Shack itself is off the
map (the tunnel shows up on the map only when it's on Hogwarts
grounds, not when it enters Hogsmeade). Sirius, HRH, and Pettigrew
were in the Shack and off the map when Snape saw it.
So rather than assume malice and insanity, I think it's best to go
with canon.
Carol
