I don't think Snape is on anyone's side but his own.  He's got a huge ego as 
well as an almost obsessive need for respect so, should he be able to 
arrange to get both top Wizards (one very old man and one homicidal maniac) 
removed, then *he* would be the most powerful Wizard around...

I don't think his goal is to rule the world, he just wants the position of 
greatness he feels he's been denied.
