I am not sure his mother is that smart.  I guess it could be JKR 
trying to downplay the importance of her, but she seems way too weak 
(mentally) to have that sorts of smarts.  Maybe Snape was the 
outside guy.  No proof of it--- just seems sneaky.  What a great 
question though.
