Nah..  I think James was a jerk and Snape not a whole lot better, but 
they were not that evil. They were both gentlemen when it came to the 
ladies and love. And these are children't books after all. It is one 
thing to have a young woman make a love potion for a young man and 
quite another for a man to make one for a women. Whole different thing. 
Difference between G and X rating. Just call me old fashioned if you 
want.
