Thank you for this excellent analysis; it's a superbly balanced and 
well-thought out explanation, and I agree on all points. Though I 
would add, about the 'escalating war': at other times it may well 
have been Snape who started it. It does say somewhere that Snape 
gave as good as he got, no?
