Since this was posted in response to a thread I started, I would like 
to point out that, in my original post, I listed a truly impressive 
array of characters to whom Snape has been mean in the books, 
Hermione among them. SO I'm not proposing or defending a St. Severus.

I'm just no longer so sure he was trying to be insulting, in that 
scene, because the *way* he does seems inconsistent with his usual 
approach.

--zgirnius, who debated including this point in that original post, 
but it was already pretty darned long, mostly becaused there are *so 
many* exmaples of Snape insulting people in the books.
